Múlt idő

By the end you can: Talk about yesterday: what you did, where you were, what there was.

Hungarian has one past tense, and it is built from one marker plus the same personal endings you already know the shape of.

The marker is - or -, attached to the verb stem. Then the endings: -/-, -/-, — ( ), -/-, -/-, -/-. Using "learn": , , , , , .

Whether the marker is - or -, and whether a linking vowel appears (-/-/-), depends on the verb's shape — one-syllable verbs and verbs ending in two consonants usually take the linking vowel: → , → . Multi-syllable verbs ending in one consonant usually just take -: → , → . Learn the common ones as whole forms; the rule has too many edges to trust cold.

"Was" is irregular and essential: *volt*. . . ? You will use more than any other past-tense verb, so start here.
